Mani Charenamei not sponsored by UGs: EFM

Imphal, Apr 28: Mani Charenamei, an independent candidate of the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency for the first phase Lok Sabha polls on April 20 has no relation whatsoever with any underground outfit.

This was stated by DP Panmei, convenor, Elders Forum of Manipur, EFM during a press conference while reacting to news-reports claiming that Mani Charenamei was a candidate sponsored and supported by the NSCN-IM.

Stating that Charenamei is sponsored by the steering committee of the EFM and Manipur National Council, MNC Thoubal, DP Panmei rubbishes the allegations against its candidate.

He also stated that Charenamei, a former DFO in the state forest department is keen in protecting Manipur and remove the sufferings of the people inflicted by the draconian laws imposed and plagued by underdevelopment.

The members of the EFM who attended the press conference also charged that the NSCN-IM backed candidate in the elections is Lolee Adani of the BJP.

They further appealed to all those who have charged Mani Charenamei to tender an apology to him.

Mani Cherinamei contested the elections as an independent and there were widescale allegation that he was supported by the NSCN(IM).

Salaries and pensions unlikely before June

Imphal, Apr 28: Salaries and pensions of the government employees are likely to be delayed till June next as the overdraft of the state government with the RBI has amounted to more than Rs. 439 crores.

According to the RBI Central account section, Nagpur, the actual overdraft amount of the state calculated till April 23 is Rs. 439 crores 33 lakhs 15 thousand 5 hundred sixty nine and ninety nine paise. The same has been intimated to the state finance department yesterday, April 27.

Sources said that the overdraft was reduced to the existing amount after the Centre released Rs. 34 crores under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes, CSS for the departments of commerce and industries, horticulture and soil conservation, veterinary and animal husbandry services, family welfare, PHED, Edn (s), social welfare, CADA, forests and environment etc.

Meanwhile, the state finance commissioner VK Thakral, IAS who was in Delhi since April 19 to pressurize the Union finance ministry officials for a waiver of the overdraft amounts has returned to Imphal today.

8000 strong security for Jiribam repolls

Jiribam, Apr 28: At least 8000 strong security forces including BSF, Army and state forces are to be deployed in the Jiribam subdivision of Imphal east where repolls are to be held at eight polling stations on April 30 and May 5.

High ranking police officers including Anish Dayal, DIG Range 1, BP Rathor, Commandant 12th Grenadier Rifles, Jiribam and other high ranking officers of BSF and state forces arrived at the subdivisional headquarters today and held minute discussions for successful conduct of the repolls.

At least five companies of the BSF arrived at the Jiribam headquarters today and they are presently stationed at Jiribam higher secondary school, Kasturba girls high school, Jiribam jail and Kalinga high school.

Reports also indicated about the deployment of more central forces are in the subdivisional headquarters before the repoll. However, two companies of CRPF which were deployed in Jiribam during first phase of polling had already left the district headquarters.

It may be mentioned ECI had ordered repolls in 40/29 to 40/36 polling stations and five polling stations in Vangai ranges of Churachandpur district on April 30 and May 5.

IMPHAL, Apr 27: Dominic Loli Adannee, BJP candidate for the Outer Parliamentary seat submitted a representation to the Election Commission of India through the chief electoral officer, Manipur demanding disqualification of Mani Charanamai, independent candidate for gross violation of election rules.
Using armed miscreants, Charanamai indulged in widespread intimidation, kidnapping and physical assault on BJP workers, it said. Openly campaigning on religious and communal line, he vandalised BJP flags, symbols and posters of the Prime Minister and other Central leaders, it charged.

B Com IIIrd year results declared

IMPHAL, Apr 27: The results of the BCom IIIrd year honours/general examinations 2003 conducted by the Manipur University were declared today.

For both the honours and the general course, poor pass percentage were recorded. The honours results recorded a low 55.5 percentage while the BCom IIIrd year general results showed a poor 32.3 percent.

Out of the total 146 candidates who appeared for the BCom IIIrd year honours examination, only 81 candidates cleared the exam.

Only two candidates managed to shine getting first division marks in aggregate. Roll no. 150152 secured 769 marks and topped the examination while roll number 150182 obtained 721 marks to secure the second position.

Other than the two attaining first division marks, forty candidates achieved second division marks while thirty nine others were declared as pass candidates.
